Not all pre-workout formulas are created equal. Some contain clinically studied ingredients at effective doses. Others hide underdosed blends behind proprietary labels. Here is a breakdown of the ingredients that actually have evidence behind them — and what to look for on the label.
Caffeine (150–300mg)
Caffeine is the most well-established performance enhancer in sports nutrition. It improves alertness, reduces perceived effort, and has been shown to increase power output in both strength and endurance exercise. Most people respond well to 150–300mg, roughly equivalent to 1.5–3 cups of coffee.
If you are caffeine-sensitive or train in the evening, consider a Stim-Free Pre-Workout that provides the pump and endurance benefits without the stimulant.
L-Citrulline (6–8g)
Citrulline converts to arginine in the kidneys, boosting nitric oxide production more effectively than taking arginine directly. The result is improved blood flow to working muscles, better nutrient delivery, and the visible muscle pump that many lifters value.
Look for at least 6g of L-citrulline or 8g of citrulline malate (2:1) per serving. Our Citrulline Malate Powder delivers a full clinical dose in every scoop.
Beta-Alanine (3.2g)
Beta-alanine increases carnosine levels in muscle tissue, which buffers hydrogen ions produced during high-intensity effort. Translation: you can push through more reps before the burn forces you to stop. The tingling sensation (paresthesia) it causes is harmless and fades with regular use.
Our Beta-Alanine Powder uses CarnoSyn-grade beta-alanine, the same form used in most clinical studies.
Creatine (3–5g)
Some pre-workouts include creatine, which supports ATP regeneration for short bursts of power. If your pre-workout already contains it, you do not need a separate creatine supplement. If it does not, consider adding our Creatine Monohydrate to your daily routine.
L-Theanine (100–200mg)
Found naturally in tea, L-theanine smooths out caffeine’s stimulant effects. It reduces jitteriness while preserving focus and alertness. The combination of caffeine and L-theanine is one of the most reliable nootropic stacks available. Try our Caffeine + L-Theanine capsules for a clean, simple focus boost.
What to Avoid
Be skeptical of proprietary blends that list ingredients without individual doses. If the label says “Energy Matrix 5g” but does not tell you how much caffeine, citrulline, or beta-alanine is inside, there is no way to know if you are getting effective amounts.
Also avoid DMAA, DMHA, and other grey-market stimulants. They carry real health risks and are banned by most athletic organizations.
